Colgate underwent many transformations beginning in 1817 when the frontier settlement of Hamilton established the Baptist Education Society of NY State. In 1823, the Colgate family consolidated their NY City Seminary with the school in Hamilton. In 1846, it became Madison University which became Colgate University in 1890. *©Michael S.
